Hugh Shannon

HPS Committee Member

Hugh is a Senior Lecturer in Health and Physical Education at Queensland University of Technology, with extensive experience in teacher education, curriculum development, assessment moderation and school leadership. An ACHPER Fellow, he serves on state and national committees advancing health and physical education.

Hugh grew up in an active family with three older brothers and neighbours always up for a game of backyard cricket, footy or other interests that often involved being outside until the streetlights came on. He participated in a wide range of physical activities during his formative years and enjoys time spent with his wife Andreena (a HPE teacher) and daughter Evelyn who are both very active. He currently plays touch and has recently taken up hockey prompted by his daughter’s developing interest in the sport. Coupled with a strong background in health education, Hugh values the importance of promoting active and healthy lifestyles.

Hugh is currently a Senior Lecturer in Health and Physical Education at Queensland University of Technology. He teaches undergraduate pre-service teachers and supervises postgraduate research students. Before employment in the tertiary education sector, Hugh worked as a secondary teacher of Health Education, Physical Education, HPE and Science with school leadership roles. He has experience in assessment moderation serving as a state and district panel member in Queensland for 18 years and as a curriculum consultant for schools and the Queensland Curriculum and Assessment Authority. Hugh is an ACHPER Fellow and current serving member of the ACHPER Queensland Board and the ACHPER Australia Health Promoting Schools Committee.

Hugh is an experienced secondary and tertiary educator, registered with Queensland College of Teachers. He has school, community club, university and state authority experience associated with the following:

  • Health literacy
  • Health promotion and education
  • Health promoting schools and workplaces
  • Health and Physical Education curriculum, pedagogy and assessment
  • Sports coaching, officiating and management (range of physical activities)

Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) including health literacy measurement and narrative health education (digital storytelling) awarded by Queensland University of Technology 2017.

Bachelor of Applied Science (Human Movement Studies – Education) with first class honours awarded by The University of Queensland 2000.
