Sue Whatman

Teacher Educator Rep
Sue Whatman is an Associate Professor in the School of Education and Professional Studies at Griffith University. She advises the HPE Double Major, oversees QCT accreditation requirements, and teaches Advanced Teaching Strategies, Specialist Planning Skills, and Sports Psychology

Coming from a small country town, being active and involved in many sports was a normal way of growing up. Riding your bike to get around or walking to and from school was also normal. Sue is committed to helping more Australians have the opportunity to make active and healthy their ‘norm’.

Sue has been an academic with Griffith University since 2010 and previously with QUT since 1993. Prior to that, Sue taught secondary HPE and geography in the state and private sectors. Sue is the Higher Degree Research Coordinator for the School of Education and Professional Studies at Griffith University in addition to her HPE program work. Sue is internationally known for her work in decolonising health and physical education and has a Doctor of Philosophy in Health Education curriculum decision-making for girls in Indigenous community settings. Sue is a volunteer life guard with Surf Life Saving Queensland and has many different level 1 coaching qualifications. Sue previously umpired hockey at an Australian junior level and state Premier league level. Sue joined the ACHPER National Board in 2017 and was elected President in July 2019 until May 2025. Sue is currently the National Vice President of ACHPER and was awarded Life Membership in 2025.

Dr Joe Scott is a Senior Lecturer in Health and Physical Education at University of the Sunshine Coast. His research focuses on designing and implementing innovative school and community strategies that empower young people to lead healthy, active lifestyles and reduce chronic disease risk.
