Melisa Chong

Chairperson

As Chair of the Health Promoting Schools Committee, Melisa leads ACHPER’s engagement in health education. Drawing on her research, she understands educators’ challenges and aims to develop practical strategies that support effective health-promoting practices without increasing teacher workload

Melisa maintains an active lifestyle through regular gym workouts, hiking, tennis and more recently pickleball. She encourages her students, peers and family to engage in physical activity with a ‘give it a go’ mentality. A passionate supporter of women’s sport, Melisa follows tennis and women’s soccer closely, especially as a proud Chelsea FC Women fan.

Melisa is a Health and Physical Education (HPE) academic and the Academic Integrity Lead at the University of Southern Queensland. Her research explores the health-related work undertaken by teachers, including formal curriculum work, the implementation of mandated health-related policies and both implicit and explicit health-related work that support student health and wellbeing. She teaches the health and physical education curriculum in both the undergraduate and postgraduate programs, with a strong focus on preparing pre-service generalist teachers to deliver effective and engaging health education in schools. With previous experiences teaching HPE in Australia and abroad, Melisa brings practical insight and a global perspective to her academic work.
