Russell Brown

ACHPER President

Russell is the President of ACHPER Australia, now leading the organisation following the outstanding tenure of Dr. Sue Whatman. Russell has been a member of ACHPER since 1975 and was awarded Life Membership in 2006.

He has been a lecturer in Physical Education and Health at Flinders University since 1990.

Russell has been involved in a variety of sporting and recreational activities throughout his life, which have included Football, Cricket, Tennis, Volleyball, Basketball, Snow Skiing and Wind Surfing. He has enjoyed a variety of roles in coaching and administration.

Russell has been a Director of the ACHPER Australia Board since 2020 and is currently the Vice President. He has been a member of ACHPER since 1975 and was awarded Life Membership in 2006. He is currently a lecturer with academic status at Flinders University and has a research and study focus in Physical Education and Health. He also works as a sessional tutor at the University of SA. Prior to commencing his university career in 1990, he worked for 14 years as a school PE and Health teacher and as an advisor in the South Australian Physical Education Branch. Russell’s academic interests are primarily concerned with the social and political foundations and issues within the Health and Physical Education learning area. He is passionate about the long-term future of ACHPER and its significance to its stakeholders and the wider professional community.

Russell has been Manager of the South Australian Physical Education & Sport Consortium since 1996.

Russell completed a Bachelor of Education with majors in Physical Education and Mathematics at Flinders University in 1975. He completed a Master of Education with the University of South Australia and Deakin University in 2005, which included a research thesis, ‘Constructing Knowledge and Curriculum Reform – an Analysis of Research on Teacher Perceptions of Health and Physical Education’.

Dr Joe Scott is a Senior Lecturer in Health and Physical Education at University of the Sunshine Coast. His research focuses on designing and implementing innovative school and community strategies that empower young people to lead healthy, active lifestyles and reduce chronic disease risk.

As Chair of the Health Promoting Schools Committee, Melisa leads ACHPER’s engagement in health education. Drawing on her research, she understands educators’ challenges and aims to develop practical strategies that support effective health-promoting practices without increasing teacher workload

Sue Whatman is an Associate Professor in the School of Education and Professional Studies at Griffith University. She advises the HPE Double Major, oversees QCT accreditation requirements, and teaches Advanced Teaching Strategies, Specialist Planning Skills, and Sports Psychology
